I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving break filled with family, fun and food! Sudie staff and students were all so excited to see everyone on Monday morning, and a sense of excitement can be felt around campus as we prepare to finish the first semester strong! This week, your Sudie Lion has been engaged in Middle of Year Diagnostic Testing, and I am thankful for how our students and teachers have set high expectations and challenged everyone to exceed their growth goals!
Throughout these next couple of weeks, we also have an opportunity to see our students' talents shine during our One Act Play, 15 Reasons Not to Be in a Play, this week and then during next week's Choir & Orchestra Winter Concert (Thursday, 12/11 at 5:00 pm). I also want to take this time to acknowledge our amazing art teacher and a super Sudie staff member, Mrs. Herrera. We are thankful for all she does for our community and how she shares her expertise. We wish her a speedy recovery!
Letter from Ms. Herrera to Sudie Community
Dear Sudie Students and Families,
As many of you know, I began breast cancer treatment last September and have since undergone chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. The outpouring of kindness and support from our Sudie community helped carry me through an incredibly challenging year, and I am deeply grateful. Your encouragement truly meant the world to me.
While I have made great progress, there are still a few more steps in the treatment process. I will be going on medical leave starting December 3rd as I undergo reconstruction surgery. The good news is that the surgery was moved up from February, which means most of my 6–8 week recovery will overlap with winter break and end-of-year testing. I am very hopeful this timing will minimize the impact on our time together in the art room—I am so excited about what we’ve been creating and learning, and I want to miss as little as possible.
I have started talking with my classes about what the coming weeks will look like, but I also want to reassure everyone that I am going to be okay. This is a much-anticipated step in healing, and I look forward to returning healthy, energized, and ready to dive back into art with my students.
Thank you again for your continued support and understanding.
With gratitude, Gabrielle Herrera
We look forward to welcoming her back soon!
As we look to the weeks ahead we are excited for the 10 Days of Holiday Cheer starting next week. Next week will also bring Standard Mastery Check testing for elementary students in reading (Tuesday, 12/9) and math (Wednesday, 12/10). The last week before Winter Break will bring ACP testing for 5th grade science and Middle School ACP & SMC testing. Friday, December 19th, will be an early release day at 1:50 pm.
Thank you all for supporting your students' success and for engaging with the Sudie community! I am excited to see our students' gifts and talents shine during this Holiday season!
