Overall, the first week went quite smoothly. Here are some highlights from their first week:
Classroom Activities: Sudie Lions had the opportunity to meet their new or prior teachers and classmates. The teachers have been proactive in engaging the students through various activities that were equipped with getting to know the classroom, peers and getting familiar with their new grade level content.
Scholars have been showing their House pride by rocking their colors gearing up for our FRIDAY HOUSE SORT. This HOUSE sort has a twist, not only will our 4th graders and new to Sudie scholars be sorted but I will also be joining a house. This magical event will be broadcasted via Google meets. Links have been sent out via Remind and will be sent out again.
Daily Routine: Classes have been implementing the AVID WICOR skills from grades 4th all the way to 8th. Each scholar received planners and have been practicing good organizational skills. We're pleased to see their sense of responsibility. By now every scholar should have received their DISD issued chromebooks loaded with Lanschool.
Communication: The school and teachers have been communicating through streamlined channels such as their class syllabus and Remind. If you have not downloaded the Remind App and joined your grade-level group, please make it a priority to do that today. You can find more info in the e-News below.
Looking ahead: Next week your scholar will be receiving school expectations & DISD Student Code of Conduct through an assembly, advisory and morning meetings.
News you could use: 22-23 STAAR SCORES are here. Scholar’s access codes will be distributed and sent home on Friday. Grades 6-8 will be given in their advisory and Grades 4-5 will receive in their homeroom classes.
We believe that our Sudie Lions are off to a promising start this year. They are showing maturity, enthusiasm, and a willingness to embrace the opportunities that come their way. We will continue to support and guide them throughout the year to ensure they have a positive and enriching school experience.
Thank you for your continuous encouragement and involvement in your scholar's education journey. We look forward to the rest of the school year and the growth and accomplishments that it will bring.

EVERY MISSION POSSIBLE!
Garden Looks Beautiful!
Thank you to Mr. Gatlin and ALL of the volunteers that helped at our Garden Work Day on Saturday! The volunteers moved soil, mulched, weeded, and planted!
The Sudie gardens are such a special place and we hope to have more volunteers to help maintain them during the school year. Be on the lookout for more work days through the school year. Please email Lily Strong at sudieptaactivities@gmail.com if you are interested in becoming more involved! Special shout out to the Bluffview neighborhood garden club who planted and will maintain the front school planters. They are absolutely beautiful!
Staff Lounge is Open
Big surprise for the Sudie Staff this week…the new, upstairs lounge was revealed!
Big thanks to all who helped make this possible. Especially Shona Bell for her tireless work, Principal Ladipo for donating her potential office space for this cause, and all who donated items, dollars or time.
Our teachers and staff are our greatest treasure. We hope they enjoy this space so much!!
Now, let’s keep it stocked all year long!

ALSO, students need to be prepared to write a book review or summary of a book they read when they return to campus in August.
NEW TEACHER INTRODUCTIONS!
Sandra Gomez (Spanish)
¡Hola Familias de Sudie Tag! I'm a native Spanish speaker raised in Southern California where I attended Spanish immersion elementary as a pilot program back in the 80's. I received my AA from Cal State Long Beach, my B.A. in Spanish from Western Kentucky University and my certification through Dallas ISD. I am passionate about the Spanish language and teaching it to others along with its rich culture. I am excited to get started teaching Spanish and consider it a privilege to be a teacher here. ¡Hasta Luego! Maestra Gómez
Renee Ivarra (4th Math & Science)
Hello 4th graders and families! My name is Renee Ivarra and I am so excited to be teaching Math and Science this school year! I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Illinois State University and a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Concordia University. This year will be my 15th year in the classroom and my first at Sudie! I am honored to join such an incredible community, and I look forward to a fantastic year collaborating, learning, and making memories! On a personal note, my husband and I just celebrated our 26th wedding anniversary! We have three sons- Antonio, who graduated this year from the University of Chicago, Julian, who is a junior at Babson University, and Gabriel who is in 7th grade. We also have the silliest (and sweetest) rescue dogs, Russell and Yoda! In my free time I enjoy cooking, baking, learning something new, and being outdoors.
Alex Rathbun (5th Reading/SS)
My name is Alex Rathbun, and I am originally from Odessa out in West Texas! I graduated from UT Permian Basin, spent some time as a substitute teacher and realized I never wanted to leave! I have been in various classrooms in short- and long-term roles for about four years now! Fifth grade was the grade that made me fall in love with teaching and start my master's through Texas Woman's University, so I am extremely grateful and excited to be back in fifth grade at Sudie!
Sydney Pitts (Inclusion Teacher)
I am a Dallas, Texas native and proud product of DISD. This is my 10th year teaching and I’m so excited to meet all of you!
I graduated from Williams College (Williamstown, Massachusetts) in 2012. 👩🏾🎓 I met the most amazing and influential people while at Williams. I lived in NYC before happily moving back home to Dallas.
I live in Downtown Dallas 🌇. I love to broaden my horizons through the performing arts, traveling, photography, and reading. I am always up for the beach, shopping, and a great coffee shop!
Brendan Carrillo (Music & Choir)
Greetings! My name is Brendan Carrillo, and I have the privilege of being the General Music teacher for 4th and 5th grade students, as well as the Choir instructor for 6th graders. Originally from Waco, Texas, I proudly earned my bachelors in Double Bass Performance from Baylor University, and then pursued a masters in the same field at Northwestern University, where I graduated with academic honors.
I am thrilled to embark on this exciting journey at Sudie and eagerly look forward to building meaningful connections with all the students. Together, we'll cultivate their passion and curiosity for music in a nurturing and educational environment. Let's make this school year one to remember! 🎶

Sudie School Supply List
If you did not order through the PTA, drop off supplies at the Come & Go Meet the Teacher on August 10th, 4:30-6:30pm.
Drop off in your child's home room (4th-5th) or advisory room (6th-8th).
Dallas ISD will require CLEAR or MESH backpacks for all students starting in the 2023-2024 school year.
The following information has been provided on the district site. Check back for any further updated information as the summer progresses. You can get one for FREE at the Back to School Kickoff on Saturday, August 5, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ellis Davis Field. Lunchboxes do not need to be clear, and monograms are permitted on clear/mesh backpacks.
As an additional option, mesh backpacks will be acceptable, however clear ones are preferred. Students may carry a small, nonclear pouch in their backpack to hold personal items, such as cellphones, money, and hygiene products. To support families, each student will be provided a durable clear backpack at no cost. Parents may also purchase the preferred clear backpack, or the acceptable mesh backpack, for their students.
A clear backpack policy alone does not ensure complete security. This proactive measure is just one of several updates to enhance student and campus safety. As a reminder, Dallas ISD’s Comprehensive Safety Plan is available at dallasisd.org/safety. We encourage everyone to visit the district’s website and social media channels for the latest updates.
